This course is accredited by the Services Seta and covers unit standard 252042 at NQF level 5 worth 5 credits.

1 Day course

This course is designed for managers in various economic sectors.  These managers are typically, but not only, second level managers such as heads of department, sectional heads or divisional heads.

Managers and leaders are hired to make decisions and solve problems.  This requires an ability to analyse problems, generate solutions, select an appropriate solution, implement it and evaluate and verify that the problem has been solved to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.  Besides technical competence, managers require ethical skill in arriving at sound decisions

Learners will be exposed to the current context within which the topic of ethics has acquired a new urgency and vibrancy.  The question of trust and why it matters from a business perspective will be explored.  The concepts of trust, values and ethics will be thoroughly interrogated in terms of their meaning and relevance for workplace operations.

Learners will be invited to consider ethics as a voyage of discovery rather than the conventional understanding of ethics as confinement or restriction of behaviour.    Learners will be encouraged to recognise ethical issues in the workplace, as well as the meaning of corporate responsibility.

Time will be devoted to exploring the sources of ethics in terms of conscience, culture, role models, philosophies, legislation and codes of conduct.  Learners will be expected to apply values and ethics to real cases.  The issue of how to design an ethic programme and a code of conduct will also be addressed.  Finally learners will be introduced to the meaning and value of the notion of the triple bottom line.

The Course makes use of both theory and practical application to consolidate learning. It is thus vital to involve the learner in interactive problem solving activities in a team context.  The facilitator should create a relaxed and fun environment to demonstrate the fact that problem solving can be an exciting and fulfilling aspect of managing in the workplace context.

The learner will be encouraged to make this their own, and continue to deepen their problem solving skills through a process of acting and reflecting on their experiences of ethical problems in the work place. Upon completing this course, participants should be able to:
